"We are not accepting query letters"  |  OCTOBER 3, 2008

So says the form letter I received from the literary agency, just the latest in a long string of rejections:

  • "We are not reading new writers at this time."

  • "____ does not fit in with our development needs at this time."

  • "It's a hard sell for us."

  • "I do not feel passionate enough about this material to offer representation."

There are others, but you get the idea. I'm turning to managers. If you're trying to break in cold, I'm told querying a manager might be a better idea. Agents are wheeler-dealers who rarely take on new clients, while managers have more time to spend building careers.
